What is the UK City of Culture Award?
Wrexham County Borough has been selected as one of the eight areas longlisted for the 2025 UK City of Culture award. This competition uses culture as a catalyst for levelling up areas outside London and puts new parts of the UK on the cultural map internationally. This is the first time regions and groups of towns have been encouraged to apply to become ‘UK City of Culture,’ with 4 of the 8 remaining in the bid (us included) not being cities.
Our UK City of Culture 2025 bid.
Entrants must prove that they can put culture at the heart of their plans to recover from the impact of the pandemic.
Our vision for UK City of Culture 2025 involves a comprehensive programme of events, based around:
- The centre of trade & events in North Wales
- The UK Capital of Play
- Home of football in Wales
- Leaders in innovation
- Welsh language and heritage
- Evolving cultural diversity
During our year as hosts we will be developing a long lasting legacy for our county’s future – using culture as a catalyst for improving health and wellbeing, local knowledge and pride, and improved educational outcomes.
Events will be held county wide and used to create opportunities and cement community engagement and cohesion.
How can you get involved in the bid?
Wrexham council submitted the initial bid, but we now need local businesses and voluntary organisations to get involved, help promote the values and benefits of the bid, and build public support and interest.
We are looking for partner businesses from across Wrexham County to become bid ambassadors.Becoming a bid ambassador won’t involve any financial commitment.
You’ll just need to promote the bid to your customers, staff and online followers during the course of the competition.

We’ll then send you our logo as well as handy guidelines on how to best use it.
Views from the local community
We also need feedback from local communities, including people from all age groups, on the proposed programme of events. These views will help to make sure that the events best reflect the role they have made and still make to the county’s identity. What Happens Next?
A finalised bid will be prepared and submitted to the UK Government at the beginning of February 2022.This document will provide more details on our programme of events and the partnerships necessary to make them happen. The judging panel will then select a short list of 3 local authorities, based on the strengths of the bids submitted. Each shortlisted area will be visited by the panel and the overall winner of the UK City of Culture Award 2025 will be decided in spring 2022.
